Welcome to Seth Tendler's Fundraising Page!
On October 22, 2017, I will be running my first marathon—the 42nd Annual Marine Corps Marathon Events in support of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS provides direct support to families who have been impacted by a death in the military regardless of geography or circumstance.
Almost exactly three years ago, our dear friend Jimmy Oelslager took his life after serving multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the Marines. He hid his pain deep down and you never would've guessed how he was suffering from his warm, friendly presence. The last time my wife and I saw Jimmy was at our wedding, where he gave me a big bear hug (as always--I kissed him on his bald head, which I feel he secrectly loved) and he held my wife up in her chair during the hora. Several times, he even came and spoke in my classroom to share his experiences with my high school students, which they listened to with rapt attention; he was actually working on a new presentation only days before he took his life. The shock of Jimmy's suicide is a pain we will never, ever forget.
He left behind a beautiful family that has to face his absense every day: Rachel, his wife and our long-time friend, Nathan (7) and Sara (4), their sweet, wonderful children. The TAPS program has been a huge part of their survivorship—helping Rachel and the kids find a community and figure out how to cope with such an enormous loss. While there is no way to wipe of away the impact of Jimmy's death, TAPS has played a big role in providing the tools for his family and friends to keep moving forward.
Studies by the VA show that an average of 20 veterans die per day due to suicide. More soldiers are dying at home than abroad, and it's easy to forget that the effects of war last long after the battlefield is cleared. That's why I am running this marathon and why I am hoping to raise funds for TAPS. It is all in memory of my friend Jimmy, who we miss constantly.
I hope you will join me in supporting this incredibly important cause. Anything you could give would mean so much for affected families like Rachel, Nathan, and Sara. I am running for them.
Thank you and much love,
